Mare Nostrum Group Raises Over £12,000 for Charities in Youth Upskill Initiative

Mare Nostrum Group (MNG) is delighted to announce that it has raised over £12,000 for its charity partners as part of its Youth Upskill Initiative, more than doubling its initial target of £5,000.

Launched in 2022, the MNG Youth Upskill Initiative is committed to helping disadvantaged young people in the UK gain the confidence and skills to assist their progress in education, work, and life. To support this goal, the initiative has been raising funds for two charities—Speakers Trust and Career Ready—which align closely with MNG’s ambition to help promote social mobility within the UK.

Both Speakers Trust and Career Ready are national social mobility charities, helping young people from all backgrounds develop their skills to succeed in their future careers. Speakers Trust works with secondary schools across the UK, training young people to become more effective communicators, whilst Career Ready connects young people to the world of work, helping to kickstart their futures. Both charities do invaluable work to empower young people and give them the foundations they need to pursue fruitful careers—something which is very important to Mare Nostrum Group.

To help raise funds for the two charities, MNG undertook the enormous challenge of walking a combined 20 million steps between July and October last year. This is the approximate number of steps the team would have taken if they had actually walked from their headquarters in Harrogate to Mare Nostrum—the Roman name for the Mediterranean Sea, from which the company took its name. In a bid to achieve this ambitious goal, the team tackled a number of physical challenges, including the Leeds 10k and the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge.

The Leeds 10k run took place in July, with team members racing through Leeds’ city centre, kickstarting the step count and marking the beginning of the 20 million step journey. Then, in September, the team tackled the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge, an all-day event that involved scaling the 3 tallest mountains in the Yorkshire Dales across a daunting 39.2km circuitous walk. Incredibly, a few colleagues managed to run the entire route.

The challenge came to an end in October, resulting in a final step count of 21,005,273 and £6,115 raised through donations. The sum was then generously matched by the company, generating a grand total of £12,230 raised in the company’s fundraising efforts for 2022.

The MNG team are incredibly proud of their achievements and are extremely grateful for the generosity of clients, friends, and family in helping to raise the final sum. This could not have been achieved without such fantastic and sustained support throughout the challenge.

With the 2022 charitable efforts now complete, MNG are looking forward to planning further fundraising activities for 2023, and making this year even bigger and better than the last!
